Monica "Shaawityait'sa" Garcia

Miss Pueblo of Acoma 2012-13

Platform: Acoma Core Values and Language

Guwa dzii hau ba! Gai dawa sra hanu tai mesh.  Du shinume Shaawityait'sa eese shaawitya hanu sada ee usraatra waashtii.  Greetings everyone! My name is Monica Garcia.  My mother is Jennifer Vallo and I am a middle child with four siblings - Monique, Eric, Greg and Joey.  I reside in the village of Acomita.  I did spend most of my childhood growing up and living at "The Rock" learning from and spending time with my grandparents, James and Dorothy Sanchez.  Living with my grandparents has taught me many things; I consider those teachings to be a blessing.

I graduated from Laguna-Acoma High School in 2007 and am currently enrolled at the NMSU Grants Branch working towards my degree in Early Childhood Education.  I am also currently employed with the Pueblo of Acoma working for the Language Retention Program teaching infants and toddlers the Acoma Keres language.

Although, I do come from an Acoma Keres speaking family, being able to maintain a conversations comes with challenge.  Like many people of my generation, understanding is our strongest point when it comes to the Acoma Keres language.  I encourage everyone to continue to put forth the effort to learn our language and who we are as Aakume Hanu.  Dawa ee.
